GCHQ is the Britain’s counterpart to the US National Security Agency – and receives a large amount of funding from the US as it “subcontracts” communications and cyber operations from US agencies. It’s Cheltenham HQ houses the main computer and analytic facilties. It also has outstations in Bude and Scarborough.

- Whitehall is drawing up plans to launch a new cyber warfare unit staffed by 2,000 security experts, according to reports. The plans, revealed by The Times and Financial Times, would bolster the UK’s arsenal of cyber weaponry, in a bid to deter hostile states from attacking British critical infrastructure.
