The BOKK Library uses page design and enhanced navigation to assist viewing of these pages. The low-tech. nature of the FRAW site, with no scripting or dynamically generated content, has always made it easier for assistive technology to read. This page describes the design and navigation functions in detail.
(Use Hotkey & ‘number’ to jump to that section)
The major navigation links use ‘hotkeys’ accessible from the keyboard, which work consistently across the BOKK Library, and some other parts of the FRAW site. Press the hotkey button for your browser and one of the following keys to go to the location indicated:
A list of hotkeys and where they link:
A About the BOKK Library.
B BOKK Library main index.
C Free Range Network copyright page.
G BOKK Glossary Index.
I BOKK Issues Index.
J BOKK Journals Index.
K Jumps direct to this list of hotkeys.
M Free Range Network contact page.
N BOKK Library News & Posts Index.
O BOKK Organizations Index.
P Download PDF version of page/resource (if present).

S FRAW Subject Index.
T Jump to the top of the current page.

W Jump to audio/video player in page (if present).
X Jumps to the ‘Embedded AV Player’ section below.
Y Go to linked YouTube video for that page (if present). See the ‘YouTube keyboard controls’ section below to access YouTube’s player.
Z Main index of the FRAW site.
In any page pressing hotkey-0 jumps to the bookmarks list, if present. Where there is a numbered list of links, the numbered hotkeys 1 to 9 jump to the destination of that link.
The design follows the accessibility guidelines as the page is logically separated into functional sections using tags rather than relying upon screen-reader labels. To aid screen-readers the design of pages is linear, with page content preceding the navigation links. Images are tagged with alternate titles, and links have extended titles giving additional information not shown on screen.
By convention, across the FRAW site all links are colour-coded:
External links usually open in a new window, and this is usually stated in the link title in case the reader wants to block this action.
Page content precedes navigation links to make the use of the TAB key easier. Image-links are excluded from the list – instead using an associated image caption to provide an easily readable link.
Finally, when using the TAB key the selected link is highlighted like this.
Where video or audio files are held on the FRAW site they are accessed from an embedded media player. This also gives the option of downloading the files to view/listen off-line.
To control the media player from the keyboard, first focus on it by repeatedly pressing the TAB key, or press hotkey-W. When the focus is on the player it will display a red border, as shown above on the right.
When the player is highlighted with a red border you ‘have focus’ on it, and the following keyboard controls will manipulate the audio player:
Keys to control the embedded media player:
Spacebar Start or stop/pause the player.
→ Fast-forwards through recording.
← Rewinds the recording.
Home Jumps to the beginning.
End Jumps to the end.
↑ Increases the volume of the player.
↓ Decreases the volume of the player.
The links below the player download the audio/video file. Clicking the link will make the browser play the file, after which ‘Save Page’ would save the file. As a short-cut to download without playing, right-click on the link and use ‘Save As’ to save a copy directly.
For those who are unaware, it’s worth noting the other control keys that operate with most web browsers – and can help you more easily navigate any web site. Note that some browsers don’t always follow the same pattern – which is why the list below sometimes gives more than one option separated by ‘or’.
